Get to Know Buckets!

Buckets of History

Open ended containers with flat bottoms have been around since ancient times. Initially they were made of clay or wood and extremely heavy, especially when carrying over long distances. Bronze, clay, wood and leather buckets have been discovered around the world from different stages of history. Bronze buckets found in Germany date back to 3500 years BC.

Trends in Buckets

The history of buckets shows how materials have been found or invented, developed and advanced over the years. Mostly these days, buckets are made from relatively low-cost plastic. However, the glamourous side of buckets are manufactured from stainless steel, these are often ceremonial ice buckets used for chilling drinks. At the other extreme, galvanised iron heavy duty fire buckets are relied upon for emergencies, typically filled with sand (and a few cigarette butts), sat in a corner, waiting for their time to shine in a fire emergency.

Mopping it Up

A useful variation on the regular bucket is the mop bucket. Mop buckets can be round, square or oval with a wringer or strainer on the top for drying excess water from the mop. The mop bucket allows the mop to pass into the water and yet also use the wringer / strainer. The mop bucket, as we know and love it today, was invented by Spanish man, Manuel Jalón Corominas in 1956.

Fun in Buckets

Its easy to assume that buckets only have serious work to do; mopping floors and putting out fires for example, however buckets can also provide fun for the kids too. The classic castle-shaped buckets for creating sandcastles, show just how versatile the humble bucket can be.
